PERSONALITY:

Akane is a seemingly shy and quiet girl. Once given an opportunity to step outside her normal boundaries and become astronaut however she seized the opportunity with both hands and has barely looked back. In fact she has proven to be remarkably daring: during the Orpheus mission she actually disconnected the backpack with her suit’s oxygen supply so that she could fit in between gaps in the probe’s structure and retrieve a loose part (it is worth noting that she increased the amount of oxygen in the air mixture being pumped into her helmet just before doing this in order to maximise the amount of time she would have before she needed to reconnect again). She is extremely intelligent and loves just about anything scientific. She is also much, much more diplomatic than Yukari, who was quite hostile to some of the NASA astronauts they met during the Orpheus mission because of some things that rubbed her the wrong way.

HISTORY

Akane was a prodigy student at Nellis Academy known for her perfect grades. She lived a very sheltered life until an off course re-entry brought astronauts Yukari and Matsuri Morita crashing down in the academy pond. When the experimental goldfish their capsule had been carrying started to have trouble breathing the other students put her forward as someone who might be able to help. She was able to make ad-hoc repairs to the goldfish’s support system using supplies from the school’s biology lab. This impressed Yukari, who got her to come along on the helicopter flight from the academy to the Space Lab in Sagamihara (the place that contracted the SSA to conduct the experiment) in case further problems arose. While at the lab Yukari made some ill-considered comments about how the SSA could really use someone like Akane. When she came under pressure from the extremely strict school administration for leaving class (the school principal suspected Yukari of conspiring against him and landing a capsule in the pond on purpose) when she shouldn’t have Akane quit Nellis Academy and –after going on a hunger strike to force her parents to let her take a year off from school to see what she could do in the outside world- unexpectedly showed up at the SSA’s rocket base on Maltide with the intention of becoming an astronaut. While she proved unsuitable for use as a pilot due to her tendency to black out when subjected to G-forces, she was recruited as a mission specialist to assist Yukari and Matsuri. Her first mission was the emergency mission to help save NASA’s Orpheus probe. Akane proved instrumental in helping save the probe, though she blacked out on both launch and re-entry. Despite blacking out twice and nearly dying during the Orpheus mission Akane appears to want to continue working as an astronaut.

SAMPLE

Akane’s breath came in ragged gasps as she ran as hard as she could after Yukari and Matsuri, hoping to make it to the edge of the jungle before the pursuing Arm Slaves caught up with them. She was feeling rather overwhelmed. As usual she’d blacked out during re-entry, then been roused by Yukari. What was unusual was that Yukari had immediately hauled her out of her seat, thrust her survival kit into her hands, and told her to run for the edge of the nearby jungle. Things were not off to a good start for Akane. And they were about to get worse.

Tripping over a rock, Akane let out a yelp as she plunged headlong towards the ground. Ahead of her, Yukari and Matsuri turned around to see what was the matter. Matsuri looked as if she was about to come back for her, but Akane waved them off.

“Run!” she told them. Matsuri hesitated, but Yukari did not.

“We’ll be back for you!” she yelled, then took off with Matsuri following close behind her. The other two girls quickly disappeared into the trees, and Akane turned to face the huge Arm Slaves that were advancing inexorably towards her.

They were of a quite slender and graceful design, one that moved almost like a human. Akane had seen footage of Arm Slaves before, but she’d never seen one this close or moving this fluidly. She found herself imagining just how the machine’s internal parts were moving in order to produce the effect she saw.

Strange words began to issue from her mouth. Something about flexible muscles and a reactor…

The machine came to a halt, and its hatch popped open with a hiss. A man dressed in a black AS pilot’s suit hopped down and approached Akane.

“Excuse me miss, are you all right?” he asked. “Can you understand what I’m- hey!”

The man rushed forward as he saw Akane’s face going pale. The young girl’s eyes were unfocused, and she was muttering something highly technical in a quiet voice.

“Hey miss, are you all right. Miss-“

He gave up talking. It appeared Akane had passed out.
